Throat of the World

In 2008, I had a story in Realms of Fantasy called "The Light of a Thousand Suns."  In it, a group of magic wielders were making (voluntary) human sacrifices to neutralize nuclear bombs.  One person sacrificed per each bomb neutralized.  As a part of the ritual, the volunteers were thrown into "the throat of the world," a movable, bottomless pit.  Today, while following a link about sinkholes from jaylake, I saw a National Geographic picture of what I had in mind, a giant sinkhole that formed beneath Guatemala.  If there was such a thing as the throat of the world, it would look something like this.

Phantods is *exactly* the right word. *shudder*

~pauses a moment to honor that poor guy who was swallowed up by the earth under his bed this week~

There's just something about a seeming perfectly-round sinkhole that gives me the heebie-jeebies in a way an irregular sinkhole never does. It almost makes me feel like a miniature black hole hit us, or something.
