Xeno's Corollary

When I take the first step on a long run--say, eight miles--I often fear that I won't be able to complete it.  So, what I do is just try to finish half of it.  Mentally, doing half feels easier, and, once I'm done with the first half, the second half becomes doable.  My thinking goes like this:  "I only have four miles left, and I know I can do four miles.  I just did four miles!"

Of course, if I'm tired, another four miles can sound darned intimidating, so I set a goal to just do two miles, which sets me up for the same sort of thinking that allowed me to start the second half at four miles.  I can keep dividing the remaining distance in half to keep myself going.

The school year is like a long run.  Today is the half way mark.  But I have been at school for thirty minutes now, which means I've done 1/2 of the school year plus thirty minutes.  Every minute I work now means one more minute added to the amount of work I've done, and the remaining bit continuously becomes a smaller fraction of the work that I've already accomplished.

If I can do half, I can do all of it.  Xeno was brilliant.

LOL. My journals are almost as dusty. I still get the urge to log stuff in them, but it seems that time and energy are ever-lacking resources that keep me from it.

    Congratulations on all your sales.…

Can you tell me how to get in touch with the artist. I would like to use a copy on some t-shirts as a prize for a kids fishing derby.

I was excited when I googled Adie Gladieux and got a hit that led me to your article. My 92 year old father passed away the day after Christmas. He had talked of two good friends he had in the army…
